Dr. David Livingstone donated thirty years of his life to the people and wilds of the African interior; in doing so Livingstone inspired such love and affection in the hearts closest to him upon his death, Chuma and Susi embarked on a thousand mile journey to deliver his earthly remains and his final journal to the coast of Africa, where his remains were transported to Britain for burial; even though he portrayed the typical English worldview of the Colonial period: Africans needed English guidance and purpose to be a civilized people. Getz points out the Asante Empire as being cosmopolitan as its society found places for both local and immigrant Muslims and non-Akan people. Igbo society was cosmopolitan because of the diverse individual experiences and its lack of centralization while permitting native born and immigrants to benefit the overall societal structure economically. Proving many of the African societies were cosmopolitan by merely the exchange of technology, ideas, culture, travel, trade, beliefs, and the various people each individual society encountered and intermingled with. Even though Africans did not possess the deep ocean-going vessels or the sailing prowess of their European counterparts, various ‘tribes’ did travel outside the continent, for example as recorded in the Christian bible relates one such journey con ducted by the Ethiopian Queen Sheba during the time of the Hebrew King Solomon along with the travels of the Swahilis across the Red Sea and into the Indian Ocean. Happiness? Is happiness the best good? In book 1 chapter 7 Aristotle brings up the topic happiness and is it the best good for humans. He says â€Å"But presumably the remark that the best good is happiness is apparently something [generally] agreed, and we still need a clearer statement of what the best good is. Perhaps, then, we shall find this if we first grasp the function of a human being† (1097b22-25 Aristotle). That statement is saying the main function of Humans is to look for happiness. Aristotle thinks happiness is to broad of an assumption and that there are several types of happiness that branch off of happiness its self. Aristotle says humans need a clearer statement of what the best good is. Human beings already have happiness to chase after; but Aristotle believes there are different kinds of happiness. With the different types we get people trying to strive for different types of happiness and are maybe unclear as to which one to chase. This is where Aristotle says the confusion comes in. We need a clearer explantion of happiness and what it is. From reading book one we can see there are four subcatergories of happiness; which are material, formal, efficient and final. Aristotle is trying to get at which one is the most important one to us as human beings. It is really to see that humans want money, pleasure, and to be trusted and honored because we believe that these goods will lead us to being happy.
